Our
History
St.
Mark's
was established by Bishop R. Bland Mitchell and eighteen charter
members, on December 14, 1951. The first service was on the feast
of the Epiphany, January 6, 1952. Early services were held
in private homes and then in "The Little Red School House"
at Polk and Kavanaugh. The first building at our current
location, a combination chapel and education building, was dedicated
on Christmas Eve, 1954. That building was funded in part with
money received from the sale of property owned by the original
St. Mark's Mission (1902-1938), which was the first church of
any denomination to be located in the Pulaski Heights area of
Little Rock. The present church building was completed in
1965. Various additions have been made since then, the most
recent being the current parish hall, offices, and choir room
in the summer of 1994.
The
Rev. William A. Willcox, Jr. served as St. Mark's
first priest-in-charge beginning in 1953, and then became rector
in 1955 when St. Mark's Mission became a Parish. He served
until 1973. In 1983 the education building was named the
Willcox Building in his honor.
The
Rev. Gordon Swope became the second rector in
December 1973 and served until his retirement in June of 1981.
The
Rev. Edward F. Glusman, Jr., who came in January
1982 and served until June 1995, was the third rector.
The
Rev. Edward J. Morgan became the fourth rector
in July 1996, and served until December 2001.
The
Rev. Rocki Proffitt was called to be the fifth
rector of St. Mark's in February 2003, and served until November, 2007.
